School Crossing Guard (Part-time Equivalent) 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: School crossing guards are responsible for the safe and orderly crossing of school-aged children to and from school at their assigned post location. 

REPORTS TO: The School Crossing Guard reports to the School Crossing Guard Supervisor. 

KEY DUTIES: 1. Assists school-aged children across streets and roadways to and from school. 2. Teaches children the proper way to cross the roadway in accordance with the Florida School Crossing Guard Training Guidelines. 3. Maintains order by directing children to proper crossing areas and encourages behavior conducive to safe travel. 4. During daily inspections at their post locations, crossing guard is aware of conditions and situations that could be potentially hazardous to pedestrians and/or motorists and reports these conditions to his/her supervisor and/or the NEXTAFF office. 5. Reports suspicious individuals and/or activities in and around school areas. 6. Notifies supervisor of children behaving unsafely in traffic. 7. Recruits new crossing guards; and assists and participates in recruitment and/or community relations activities as requested. 8. Attends meetings and trainings as required. 9. Other duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Good physical condition, including sight, hearing, and ability to move and maneuver quickly to avoid danger from errant vehicles; 2. Ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provide approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of the paddle’s STOP message during the entire crossing movement; 3. Ability to communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously; 4. Ability to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and warn and manage students in enough time to avoid injury. 5. Mental alertness; 6. Neat appearance; 7. Good character; 8. Dependability; and 9. An overall sense of responsibility for the safety of students.
