Job Title: Interventional Radiology Technologist (IR Tech)

Job Summary:

The Interventional Radiology Technologist assists physicians in performing minimally invasive, image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. This role involves preparing patients and equipment, operating imaging technology, maintaining a sterile environment, monitoring patient safety, and ensuring high-quality imaging throughout procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare procedure rooms, equipment, and supplies for interventional procedures.
  • Verify patient identity, medical history, and informed consent.
  • Position patients and explain procedures to help ensure comfort and cooperation.
  • Operate fluoroscopy, digital imaging, and other radiologic equipment to produce high-quality images.
  • Assist interventional radiologists during procedures such as:
    • Angiograms
    • Biopsies
    • Drainage catheter placements
    • Central venous catheter insertions
    • Stent placements
    • Embolization procedures
  • Maintain sterile technique and assist with aseptic procedures.
  • Monitor patient condition, including vital signs, during procedures.
  • Administer contrast media as permitted by state regulations and facility policy.
  • Document procedure details accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Ensure radiation safety practices for patients, staff, and physicians.
  • Clean, inspect, and maintain imaging equipment according to manufacturer and facility standards.
  • Participate in emergency procedures and provide basic life support when needed.
  • Rotate through on-call schedules as required.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in Radiologic Technology or completion of an accredited Radiologic Technology program.
  • Current ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) certification in Radiography (R).
  • State radiologic technologist license (if required).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Preferred: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Previous experience in interventional radiology or cardiac catheterization laboratory preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of radiographic anatomy, physiology, and imaging techniques.
  • Familiarity with fluoroscopy and image-guided procedures.
  • Excellent sterile technique and infection prevention practices.
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced and high-pressure environments.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Knowledge of radiation protection principles (ALARA).
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and PACS systems.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Lift and transfer patients with assistance as needed (typically up to 50 pounds).
  • Manual dexterity to handle delicate instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to wear lead protective equipment for prolonged periods.
  • Visual acuity sufficient to evaluate medical images and monitor patient status.

Typical Schedule
  • Full-time, part-time, or per diem positions available.
  • May include evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call responsibilities for emergency procedures.
Preferred Certifications
  • ARRT Certification in Vascular Interventional Radiography (VI)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Continuing education to maintain ARRT certification and licensure
