Job Title: Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA)
Job Summary:
The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) is responsible for assisting in the delivery of occupational therapy services to individuals with physical, mental, or developmental conditions that impact their ability to perform daily activities. Under the guidance and supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist (OT), the COTA will implement therapeutic interventions, monitor patient progress, and document outcomes to improve patients' quality of life.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide Therapeutic Services:
    • Implement treatment plans developed by the Occupational Therapist (OT).
    • Assist patients in exercises and activities designed to improve their motor skills, cognitive function, and daily living abilities.
    • Educate patients and their families on home exercises, adaptive techniques, and strategies to improve independence.
  • Patient Assessment:
    • Assist in the assessment of patients' functional abilities by observing and documenting their responses to therapeutic interventions.
    • Report observations and progress to the supervising OT to modify treatment plans as necessary.
  • Documentation and Record Keeping:
    • Maintain accurate and timely patient records, including therapy progress notes, treatment plans, and any changes in the patient's condition.
    • Ensure documentation complies with regulatory standards, including HIPAA and other privacy laws.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork:
    • Work collaboratively with the OT and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive care.
    • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team about patient needs and progress.
  • Patient Education:
    • Provide education on adaptive equipment, techniques, and strategies that promote self-care, mobility, and daily tasks.
    • Encourage patient participation in their own therapy by setting realistic goals and fostering motivation.
  • Safety and Compliance:
    • Adhere to safety standards and guidelines during therapy sessions.
    • Ensure patients’ comfort and safety by modifying treatment techniques as necessary based on their physical or cognitive status.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Associate's degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
  • Certification: Current certification from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
  • Licensing: State licensure as a COTA (requirements may vary by state).
  • Experience: Previous experience in occupational therapy (preferred but not always required).
  • Skills:
    • Strong understanding of therapeutic techniques and modalities.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
    • Compassionate and patient-focused attitude.
    • Ability to observe and document patient progress accurately.
Work Environment:
  • COTAs work in various settings, including:
    • Hospitals
    • Rehabilitation centers
    • Nursing homes
    • Schools
    • Home health care
    • Outpatient clinics
Physical Demands:
  • COTAs must be able to assist with patient transfers, positioning, and mobility.
  • Frequent physical activity is required, including standing, walking, bending, and lifting.
Additional Information:
  • COTAs are required to maintain their certification and licensure through continuing education
