TITLE: Charge Nurse

REPORTS: Director of Nursing

STATUS: Non-exempt, Full Time

JOB SUMMARY

The Charge Nurse (CN) provides coordination and supervision of professional and nonprofessional staff as delegated by and in the absence of the Director. This includes all child/client/family and employee activities. The CN is responsible for tasks and duties that are delegated by the Director of Nursing including total quality client/family advocacy and coordination of all care in a multidisciplinary method. The Charge Nurse is responsible for the coordination of care of the child/family, assessing needs, and case management. The CN is responsible for direct client care embracing a holistic approach to the care of the child and family. This includes; educational, psychosocial, behavioral, physical, mental, and emotional care/needs of the child. The CN will also educate the client/family regarding immediate care needs and preventative behaviors. The CN will be familiar with Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care (PPEC) regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Licensed as a registered nurse in Florida.
  2. Current certification in CPR
  3. Evidence of negative TB skin test or chest x-ray; and
  4. Level 2 Florida background screening
  5. Preferred experience in pediatric acute care including management of feeding tubes, complex respiratory diagnoses and complex medical conditions

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

1. Provides exceptional customer service and quality care:

Provides proposals and solutions to meet goals and work requirements.

Participates in a team effort to fulfill area goals and work requirements.

Maintains confidentiality in all situations and interactions.

Able to provide guidance and supervision to team members with a positive approach.

Works as a team player and works effectively with minimal supervision.

2. Conducts sound nursing assessments and utilizes appropriate established guidelines.

Demonstrates the ability to utilize and apply nursing process in a child care setting.

Demonstrates the ability to provide individualized care at all times.

Teaches all team members this approach by example.

Utilizes the appropriate guidelines and information based on the age of the child to foster independence and advancement.

Flexible in changes that occur throughout the day including staffing, children, employees and nursing care.

Handles emergent situations while remaining calm.

Reports situations immediately to the Administrator, DON or FL Designee\3. Documents appropriate information in a timely manner.

Performs data entry at the time care/direction is given.

Utilizes proper procedure for all care/direction.

Documents all communications with all members of the multidisciplinary team in the child/client’s medical record.

Documents or delegates accurate and complete demographic assessment information on all children.

Uses dates, time, and signature appropriately on all documentation.

4. Maintains the following nursing responsibilities:

Performs initial assessments of the children/families at the center for current medical and psychosocial status and appropriateness of care.

Coordinates all care to the children as directed by the physician according to the plan of treatment and care plans.

Reports condition of the child to all team members, supervisors, physicians and parents.

Makes daily rounds or more frequently if indicated to gather this information.

Supervises all documentation making sure it is accurate and appropriately done in a timely manner.

Supervises assessments, evaluations, observations, and management of protocols established in the plans of treatment.

Comprehends procedures that require substantial specialized knowledge.

Provides direct client care including personal care activities, use of adaptive equipment, follow through for therapy, administration of medications, treatments and procedures.

Maintains a clean, healthful and safe environment.

Fosters the family and client to achieve independence.

Seeks advice and assistance if needed.

5. Maintains professional responsibilities to stay up to date on standards regarding child care, PPEC regulations and policies.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Orchestrates the opening and/or closing of the center and directs staff and children to their appropriate rooms.

2. Completes intake referrals and gives report to Location Director of Nursing.

3. Motivates all team members and organizes the day-to-day activities of the assigned team.

4. Supervises all professional and nonprofessional staff members in the absence of the Location Director of Nursing. The DON may delegate this supervision of personnel when present as appropriate. Supervises care provided by RN Case Manager, LPN, CNA, and assistants on assigned team of children.

5. Acts as a preceptor and mentor for employees as experience and knowledge permits.

6. Participates in the planning of in-service training programs making them interesting and useful in day-to-day practices.

7. Participates in the QA program and assists in all aspects of the process including data collection, evaluation of problems and solutions, and the design of monitors.
